Transforming Math Anxiety: Lily's Inspiring Journey with TurningPoint Math

Updated: Jul 25

Introduction

Meet Lily, a bright and determined 11-year-old who came to us at TurningPoint Math two and a half years ago. Like many students, Lily had a challenging relationship with math. The mere mention of the subject would often leave her in tears. But with the right support and a personalized approach, Lily's story is one of incredible transformation.

Initial Challenges

Lily's struggle with math was compounded by her dyslexia, which made it difficult for her to grasp and retain mathematical concepts. Despite making significant progress with her Barton Reading and Spelling tutor, math remained a daunting hurdle. Recognizing this, her Barton tutor recommended TurningPoint Math, knowing we could integrate Barton methods into our instruction to better support Lily.

Starting Fresh with RightStart Mathematics

When Lily began her journey with us, we decided to start from scratch using the RightStart Mathematics curriculum. Designed specifically for the unique needs of dyslexic students, this curriculum provided the perfect foundation. We began at Level B, which is equivalent to the first-grade level, focusing on building a solid understanding of basic concepts while reinforcing Lily's confidence in the areas she already mastered.

Personalized Instruction and Building Confidence

One of the key aspects of Lily's success was the personalized attention she received in our one-on-one sessions. By tailoring our approach to her specific needs, we were able to skip over the concepts she was already comfortable with and dedicate more time to the areas that had previously been challenging. This method not only bolstered her skills but also built her confidence.

A Surprising Turnaround

Within just two weeks, Lily's attitude towards math began to change. Her mother texted me, astonished by Lily's newfound enthusiasm and request for more math sessions each week. Although my schedule initially allowed for only three days of tutoring, we soon increased it to four and eventually five days a week to accommodate Lily's eagerness to learn.

Remarkable Progress

Lily's dedication and hard work paid off. In just two years, she progressed from the beginning of Level B to the completion of Level F in the RightStart Mathematics curriculum. That's five levels in two years! This remarkable achievement is a testament to Lily's determination, her parents' support, and the effectiveness of a tailored, one-on-one tutoring approach.

Continuing the Journey

Lily's journey with TurningPoint Math is ongoing. She continues to work with me and is now just one and a half levels away from completing the entire RightStart Mathematics curriculum. As she progresses, I will continue to accommodate her needs, ensuring she has the support required to tackle even more advanced topics, including Algebra.

A Passion for Math

Lily's love for math has grown so much that she often requests tutoring sessions even while traveling or visiting family. Her motivation to catch up with her peers and her parents' commitment to her education have played significant roles in her success.

Final Thoughts

Lily's story is a powerful example of how a personalized, supportive tutoring approach can transform a student's attitude and abilities in math. At TurningPoint Math, we believe that every student has the potential to succeed, no matter their starting point. With the right guidance and encouragement, math can go from being a source of anxiety to a subject of joy and triumph.
