What We need from You
Below you will find a general outline of things you can do, as a parent, to support your student's learning time.
Also here are what we as tutors expect of your students.
The Role of the Parent
For online tutoring to be truly beneficial, parents should focus on providing the following key elements:
-
A Quiet, Distraction-Free Environment: Ensure your child has a dedicated space for learning where they can focus without interruptions.
-
Reliable Technology: A stable internet connection, a working computer or tablet, and the necessary software (like Zoom or Koala Classroom) an external camera and mounting arm, so that the tutor can see what is going on on your student's desktop. (Old smart phones that no longer have sim cards work best, as long as they can connect to household wifi, and download the zoom app). These items are essential for seamless sessions that give your student the best opportunity to advance and feel confident quickly.
-
Consistent Schedule: Stick to a regular tutoring schedule as much as possible, to help your child build a routine and stay on track with their learning goals.
-
Positive Reinforcement: Encourage and support your child’s efforts, celebrating their progress to keep them motivated.
-
Open Communication: Stay in touch with the tutor to discuss your child's progress, any concerns, or adjustments needed in the learning plan. If you are unsure whether to discuss something with your tutor directly, reach out to the central office - you can even use the 'booking' feature, on the website, and book a consultation with Sharon, that way. Or text her directly.
-
Preparedness: Ensure your child is ready for each session with the necessary materials, like textbooks, notebooks, manipulatives, and completed assignments.
-
Timely payment: You should pay your invoice quickly, once you receive it at the beginning of each month. Please remember that while we do very much love helping your child learn to love math, we do have mouths to feed at our house too! Payment of your invoice within 5 days of receiving it, is appreciated. (those who are using Classwallet to pay can kindly submit a screenshot of their submission, including the date it was submitted so that we can project the likely timeline of payment). Turningpoint Tutoring reserves the right to suspend tutoring until payment is received after three sessions have been provided without payment (and/or proof of submission to Classwallet.)
-
Clear communication with your child's tutor regarding schedules: Please keep your child's tutor up to date about any changes in the planned schedule. There are two parts to this expectation-- On a monthly basis: toward the end of each month, please touch base with your student's tutor directly, and let them know of any schedule changes in the upcoming month. (Classwallet clients will need to do this on a quarterly basis, as your invoices will be sent out quarterly.) On a Daily basis: If you need to make any last-minute changes to your child’s tutoring session, please let the tutor know at least 24 hours in advance. We’re happy to reschedule for things like sickness or unexpected conflicts. However, if notice is given less than 24 hours before the session, rescheduling or charging for the session will be at the tutor’s discretion.
-
Predictability for planning: If you need to take a break from tutoring for much more than about two weeks, we need you to pay a deposit of approximately half of the fees for the time you are gone, to hold your child's spot on the calendar, until your return. This amount will credit toward your child's first lessons upon your return. ie- if you take off two months, in the summer, you will need to pay a deposit of 1 month, to hold the spot on the calendar. This deposit will be credited toward the first month, after your return. If your plans change, you must notify us 1 month (20 business days) prior to what the expected return date was, in order to receive a refund of your deposit.
By tending to these essentials, you help create the best possible environment for your child’s success in online tutoring.
